New year, new design

My schedule was kind to me and a long overdue redesign of this site is finally complete.  My main objective was simply to have a cleaner, more minimal design.

The large banner at the top of the page was beginning to show its age stylistically speaking, as were other elements.  Web style is very much subject to trends and fashions, and those rounded corners you once considered essential can suddenly look very dated!  A priority was to find a way to retain the 'AJ' logo.  This is the extent of my personal 'branding' and its simplicity allows me to incorporate it in many places, not just online.

Otherwise many elements have been retained, and I am pleased to say that I obviously followed my own advice when writing the HTML as CSS changes were largley all that was required.

Training at Academy Class

Academy Class Training My training services have been put into excellent use lately working for those lovely people at Academy Class Training.

I have been delivering a three day AJAX course as well as a concise two day overview of HTML/CSS.

Teaching others is a fantastically rewarding challenge. Not only does it ensure your own skills are kept right up to date, but it is a great chance to meet other developers from small businesses and gain valuable insight into what people 'out there' are also working on.

old news (yes I know that's an oxymoron)

MODx

A recent project has given me a perfect opportunity to get familiar with MODx, an attractive looking Opensource PHP Application Framework.  With the project almost complete I can fully recommend MODx.

The documentation is good, the user base is growing, and most importantly I believe it achieves a very good balance between power and simplicity. There's always more than one way to achieve the results you desire, so you can adapt it to your own style. I hope it continues to grow and I am looking forward to utilising it to deliver more good results for my clients in the future.

PHP Frameworks on test - CodeIgniter

I was recently introduced to CodeIgniter, an open source PHP Web Application framework. The number of open source frameworks out there seems to be growing, and I find it can lead to some confusion about which, if any, one should adopt. Well as I write this I've already used CodeIgniter on the administration side of a web site, and also on a CMS.

CodeIgniter is a doddle to pick up if you're fluent in PHP, and many of its pre-written function libraries are incredibly useful. I found a function for almost all of the really annoying tasks that come up again and again. It has a small footprint, is well documented, very easily configured and was a pleasure to work with.
